Labour And How A Baby Is BornThe birth of a baby is a wonderful and exciting time, however, many women go into labour not knowing what is actually happening to their body as their baby is born. In this session we discuss the process of birth and discuss any anxieties that you may have whilst you await the first signs of labour beginning.
Positions For Labour And Birth
This really is an exciting time, labour has begun and your baby will soon be born. There is hard work ahead and there will be some discomfort as labour progresses but there are things that you can do to help you to cope. In this session we focus on what positions you can use to ease your discomfort during labour and for the birth of your baby. You will have plenty of time to practice these and see which suits you.
Pain Relief And How You Can Cope
Following on from the previous session we continue the theme of what you can do to help ease the discomfort of labour. For many mums, the excitement of their baby’s birth may be overshadowed by anxieties about the pain associated with labour and birth. Labour invariably involves some level of pain, but with preparation and knowledge you can build up your confidence, discuss your own tolerance of pain and also the different methods of pain relief, with or without the use of drugs.
Complications Of Labour
Most labours are perfectly normal and follow the natural course from beginning to end. Some, however, are not so normal and require intervention to ensure that all goes as smoothly and as safe as possible. There may be reasons for being induced, having a caesarean, ventous or forcepts delivery and help if your baby is breech. It may not be the labour that you have planned but it can still be your labour and you may feel more in control if you are aware of these things beforehand.
Techniques For Breastfeeding
Human milk has evolved to meet the specific needs of a human baby and therefore it is regarded as perfect for your baby. The majority of women in Britain now choose to breastfeed their baby, but many do not continue beyond the first few weeks. With adequate preparation and support it has been proven that women can breastfeed their baby successfully and enjoy all the associated benefits to both her own and her baby’s health. In this session we discuss whether you are going to give breastfeeding a go and, if you are, some techniques and positions for ensuring that your feeding gets off to as good a start as possible.
Planning a Home Birth
Many women choose to have a home birth if their pregnancy has been risk free. There are many advantages of having your baby at home. In this session we run through what you need to do to prepare for a home delivery.
Elective Caesarean
The rates of caesarean have been increasing worldwide for one reason or another and many women now face the prospect of this being the mode that they will deliver their baby. Caesareans are necessary for safety in some cases and are often known in advance. This may not be how you had expected to deliver your baby, however, it can still be a very positive experience. In this session we go through what happens in the operation and share a few tips on how to recover quickly afterwards.
Writing a Birth Plan
A birth plan gives you the opportunity to document your thoughts on the type of birth that you would like, a way of communicating what you would like to happen and what you would like to avoid. However, they should not be inflexible. In this session we discuss how to write this important plan.
Basic Baby Care
Some parents have no experience of looking after a new baby and some feel inhibited about admiting that they know little about the very basics of baby care. In years gone by feeding, changing and bathing your little baby would have been discussed in NHS antenatal classes or on the postnatal ward, Unfortunately this no longer happens. In the session you get a chance to discuss such fundamentals as feeding, changing, nappies, burping, dressing and swaddling a baby.
Baby Massage & Footprints
Here is a little add on for following the birth of your baby. In this session I will teach you the basics of touch and massage for your new baby. It is simple and gentle and is a particularly good skill to have for after bathtime routines or just for those moments you want to soothe and touch your baby. During the session we can take footprints of those tiny feet for you to treasure forever!
